AfriForum’s Centurion branch cleans up old military cemetery

The AfriForum branch in Centurion and the Orde van die Boshoed started on 24 April 2021 to clean up the old military cemetery in Thaba Tshwane (previously Voortrekkerhoogte). This cemetery is in a very poor condition: Building waste and home refuse are dumped illegally; the vegetation overgrew almost everything and open fires are often lit there.

The Centurion branch used a tractor and cutter, and industrial lawn mower and a number of bush cutters to mow the lawn and clear some of the bushes. Many bags of refuse were collected and removed. The area towards Valhalla unfortunately turned into an illegal refuse dump.

“It is shocking to see how this cemetery has fallen into disrepair and is allowed to deteriorate even further. AfriForum will continue to take ownership of our heritage and protect it. Projects like these are very important because community members still want to visit loved ones who are resting here,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Greater Pretoria South.

“Taking on this project has brought us much pleasure. Men and women who saw one another almost 34 years ago at the border once again took hands today to work together. AfriForum’s Centurion branch wants to thank everyone for their participation and hard work,” says André de Bruyn, Chairperson of AfriForum’ Centurion branch.
