#YourTown campaign: AfriForum’s Springs branch launches clean-up action at War Memorial

The AfriForum branch in Springs on 2 November 2019 launched a mass clean-up action at the War Memorial in the town. This action forms part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign.

The branch decided on this memorial – commemorating World War I – for the action seeing as it has become an eyesore for the community. A local contractor cut the grass while branch members picked up litter in the area. Branch and community members furthermore rendered assistance by pruning trees, removing weeds and picking up litter in the area. Approximately ten refuse bags were filled up with litter.

“The neatness of Springs is busy deteriorating immensely, while the fence around the memorial is also being vandalised. Homeless people use the area as an illegal place to sleep and it is subsequently a safety risk for community members. The branch will furthermore launch similar actions to mobilise the involvement of community members in a proactive manner while also placing pressure on the local government,” says Cornel Swart, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Springs branch.

“Actions such as these serve as concrete proof that community structures must work towards achieving a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future and become involved themselves in order to solve problems proactively. The community is encouraged to become involved with the projects of the branch,” concludes Swart.
