Residents of Bethal clean up themselves after refuse was dumped illegally

On Friday 11 June AfriForum’s Bethal branch and Why Wait Skip IT began cleaning an area in this town themselves after refuse was dumped illegally.

The field next to Malherbe Street was cleaned after some residents began dumping their refuse there. The residents merely dumped bags full of refuse there, presumably as a result of poor service delivery by the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.

Why Wait Skip IT has in the meantime been appointed to clean the refuse bins in town on a weekly basis. The contractor will clean the 30 AfriForum refuse bins in town weekly and remove the refuse.

The branch further assisted in removing the Bethal police station’s refuse bin and removed the refuse with the help of the newly appointed contractor. The Govan Mbeki Local Municipality simply failed to remove the refuse.

The town was recently yet again left without water. AfriForum hurriedly arranged with a farmer to deliver water on Saturday 12 June at the water point at the AC Church.

“Govan Mbeki Local Municipality’s poor service delivery results in more and more services having to be performed by the civil society of Bethal. They have almost been completely immobilised and residents are left with no other choice but to start doing themselves,” says Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Lowveld.
