The AfriForum branch in Springs reacted on 14 February 2021 when a substation in the central business district caught fire. The neighbourhood watch members mobilised, but at the same time another fire broke out at the mini-substation in Zig Zag Road. The neighbourhood watch members immediately evaluated the situation and closed off the road.
The Springs neighbourhood watch used its watercarrier with the fire brigade’s permission to extinguish the fire at the mini-substation and manage the situation. The fire brigade could then focus all its effort on the larger fire in the central business district.
According to Cornel Swart, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Springs branch, it is thanks to effective training, equipment and purposeful action that AfriForum neighbourhood watch members could react so quickly and help get the situation under control.
