AfriForum’s control room for Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga in March 2021 reported and handled more than 900 incidents. The control room also supported AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in these provinces. The purpose of the control room is to strengthen AfriForum neighbourhood watches and to ensure that support and the necessary resources can be summoned quicker.
AfriForum neighbourhood watches in these three provinces held 607 patrols during March (242 in Gauteng, 143 in Mpumalanga and 222 in Limpopo) in which 1 036 people participated.
“The control room offers many advantages for AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches. It adds value seeing as crime trends are pointed out, as well as what type of crime is increasing in certain areas,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the northern region.
“With regard to trends increasing, AfriForum would like to make an appeal to members of the public in Gauteng to remove valuable items from their vehicles and to also make sure that vehicles are parked in safe areas considering that vehicle theft increased during March 2021,” concludes Coetzer.
