AfriForum continued its court case against Black First Land First’s Andile Mngxitama today in the Equality Court. This case relates to Mngxitama’s comments in 2018 where he said that BLF intends to kill five white people for every black person who dies in taxi violence.
Ernst Roets, Head of Policy and Action at AfriForum, completed his examination in chief, after which he was cross examined by BLF and Mngxitama’s legal representative.
AfriForum demands that Mngxitama’s speech should be declared hate speech, that Mngxitama should issue a public apology and that the BLF and Mngxitama should donate R500 000 to an organisation that works to combat hate speech and violence against minorities. Furthermore, that the matter be refered to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a criminal prosecution as well.
“It is important that no politician thinks that they are above the law. AfriForum also wants to ensure that there are serious legal repercussions for any incitement of violence against a group or individual based on their race,” says Roets.
The matter will continue in court on 9 December 2020.
