AfriForum’s branches patrol dangerous crossings in Pretoria, clean areas

The AfriForum branches in Pretoria worked hard this past week to safeguard parts of this city and make areas clean and tidy.

On 18 and 19 May 2021 the Centurion, Moreleta Park, Greater Moot and Pionier branch chose ten dangerous crossings in their respective areas where they increased visibility to combat crime. The aim of this project was to see if the increased visibility reduced especially robberies and hijackings.

“AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches will continue to act proactively to put a stop to crime. It is important for community members to become involved with established safety structures in their neighbourhood, says Sampie Steinberg, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria North.

Meanwhile during the last week the AfriForum branch in Centurion inter alia cut the grass around the defence force’s fence in Valhalla. The tall gras made it easy for criminals to jump over the fence and hide.

“It is extremely important for this branch to keep these places where attacks take place open, clean and safe for our residents being targeted by crime,” says André de Bruyn, chairman of the AfriForum branch in Centurion.

The branch appointed two new workers to take on sustainable cleaning projects in the city. The one worker was placed in the Valhalla area where refuse was picked up, sidewalks were cleaned and weed removed to create a cleaner environment for all. The other worker was placed at the old military cemetery in Thaba Tshwane to cut the grass and clean this area weekly.

“AfriForum will continue to take ownership of our heritage and protect it. Projects like these are very important to make a real difference in communities. It is important that communities jump in themselves and start working in their communities to create a cleaner and safer environment for everyone,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria South.
