AfriForum’s Bloemfontein branches donate hand sanitiser

The AfriForum branches in Bloemfontein over the past two weeks donated 500 litres hand sanitiser to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), fire brigades, traffic departments, a school for autistic children, an aftercare centre for disabled persons and various old-age homes to ensure the safety of residents and personnel. AfriForum was swamped with requests from different organisations and the nine AfriForum branches in Bloemfontein (Leeuwberg, Uitsig, Pellissier, Fichardtpark, Hospitaalpark, Wilgehof, Langenhovenpark, Rayton-Heuwelsig and Bloemfontein North) subsequently decided to make this donation.

The following institutions received donations:

  • SANDF 3 Military Hospital
  • Military police
  • Municipal traffic department
  • Provincial traffic department
  • Mangaung fire brigade
  • Lettie Fouché School for autistic children
  • VS Aftercare Centre for disabled persons
  • Rosenheim retirement village (frail care unit)
  • Fichardtpark retirement village (frail care unit)
  • Bayswater retirement village (frail care unit)
  • Stirling Medical Centre
  • ER24
  • MED24
  • Netcare 911
  • VR Security
  • ITR Security

According to Joseph Renaud, AfriForum’s Head of Safety for the central region, the COVID-19 crisis caught old-age homes and service organisations off-guard and they weren’t prepared for the increase in the use of medical supplies. In addition, these supplies are not readily available and institutions are being exploited with excessive prices seeing as the demand for hand sanitiser is now considerably higher. Personnel of the institutions that received hand sanitiser are therefore extremely grateful for the contribution which AfriForum made to them.

“It is a privilege that we are able to support and keep safe Bloemfontein’s essential personnel during the nationwide lockdown, seeing as they are responsible for looking after the most vulnerable members of the community. We are truly grateful for every emergency worker that is placing his/her own safety at risk to take care of the public who needs their help now more than ever before. Together we are making a difference in our community with every project, irrespective of how big or small it might be,” says Christo Groenewald, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the City of Roses.
