AfriForum recently requested the Department of Transport in Vryheid to provide an action plan to maintain the tarred road between this town and Paulpietersburg. The main route between these two towns has been in a very bad condition the past few years and no real attempt has been made to maintain potholes, road signs or the grass next to the road.
The relevant potholes are deep and are causing numerous accidents on this route. Grass grows right up against this road and is so high that motorists cannot see the stray cattle. Road signs next to this road are falling over and are never repaired.
“It is a pity that accidents and complaints by the public have become the standard for the department to pay attention to problems. This road is being used daily and is one of the main routes from Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and also the best known route to Pretoria for the residents of these two towns,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
AfriForum will consider liaising with the provincial offices if the local Department of Transport does not provide an acceptable action plan.
