AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Harrismith hard at work to assist the community

AfriForum’s Harrismith neighbourhood watch has kicked off the year by getting involved with several incidents during which they supported the community.

The neighbourhood watch assisted on a scene in Vowe Street earlier this month where the street needed to be closed off urgently to make it possible for a Netcare 911 helicopter to land. The helicopter had to transport a patient to a hospital in Johannesburg and the neighbourhood watch helped to safely close off the street.

They also captured a suspect who allegedly stole copper cables in Lindley Street, after which they handed him over to the police. The neighbourhood watch furthermore assisted at several traffic accident scenes.

In another incident a 17-year-old girl went missing. She was found approximately 02:00 the next morning. “This success was the result of good cooperation between the neighbourhood watch, the police and security companies. The girl was returned to her parents unharmed,” says Jan-Hendrik van Heerden, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Harrismith neighbourhood watch.

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch also transported water to the Harrismith Animal Shelter for almost two months, after the local municipality failed to fix the pipeline.

Chris Morgan, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Hoogland area encourages community members to join this active neighbourhood watch to support the community. “By joining our structures you can make a positive difference. Safety is one of our main priorities and for this reason we invite the community to join our neighbourhood watch,” concludes Morgan.
