AfriForum improves area’s safety by pruning trees in Belville

The civil rights organisation AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch pruned 20 trees in Bill Bezuidenhout Avenue and Van der Stel Street on 16 June 2021 to help make the area safer.

This project was initiated after the branch received several complaints regarding the unkempt trees and failure by the municipality to address the problem. The trees posed a safety risk, especially for the pedestrians passing through the area, as several pedestrians were robbed by criminals hiding in the bushes.

According to Johardt van Heerden, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Boland, the project forms part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign which focuses on empowering towns to solve their own problems.

“Projects such as these, where a community stands together to make a difference, contribute to more self-reliant communities. I want to thank everyone who assisted in completing this project successfully. Arrangements will be made to do similar projects in other areas,” says Van Heerden.

The branch encourages members of the community to get involved with similar projects and to become part of the solution. Join AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch today by sending an SMS with “Cape Town North” to 45350 (R1).
