The AfriForum branch in Springs at long last started seeing results with regards to the local refuse transfer station after continuous pressure on the Ekurhuleni Metro. The civil rights organisation on three separate occasions made a plea to the Metro to make the refuse transfer station at Daggafontein more functional for members of the public.
“With the current process of appointing new service providers at landfill sites, the pressure on transfer stations in Springs increased immensely, so much so that the public started dumping their refuse illegally in fields and open spaces in the community,” says Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
During the past couple of weeks, AfriForum learned that a service provider is busy cleaning up the Daggafontein refuse transfer station. As such the transfer station can now be used functionally by the community.
“It is a relief to see that the Metro is busy tackling and improving a big problem in the community. AfriForum hopes that they will continue to fulfil their responsibilities towards the residents paying for services. AfriForum is making a plea to community members to make use of the refuse transfer stations rather than dumping their refuse in fields and parks,” says Ungerer.
