AfriForum’s Bloemfontein branches organise Fight and Build project

The AfriForum branches in Bloemfontein started their Fight and Build project on 1 May with a refuse removal project and an information session about AfriForum’s activities in Bloemfontein.

AfriForum Youth, AfriForum neighbourhood watches, VR Security, Med24/7 Ambulance Services and the emergency medical vehicle of Life Rosepark Hospital were all part of the information session.

AfriForum’s Rayton-Heuwelsig branch started removing refuse early in the morning. Several businesses and community members made donations and also assisted in removing refuse from Hillsboro, Dan Pienaar and Heuwelsig. A total distance of 580 km was travelled in order to complete the project and 105 tons of refuse were removed.

“This project was not done by AfriForum alone, but members of the public and businesses approached us and asked how they could be of assistance. The public strengthens us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them,” says Christo Groenewald, District Coordinator of AfriForum’s Bloemfontein branches.

In September 2020, AfriForum started a sustainable refuse removal service for Bloemfontein residents who joined the initiative, following the municipality’s failure to ensure regular service delivery. All members of the public are welcome to register and join.

“We are also proud to say that the Bloemfontein branches are already running four sustainable projects, which include the refuse removal project as well as painting street names. We also have Anchor of Hope which will assist in the monthly maintenance and improvement of two monuments – the one at the President Brand Cemetery and the Brits Monument at the Presidency. Thanks to contractors that were appointed under AfriForum Pionier, and the purchasing of tractors, we will now be able to do maintenance and upgrading in the northern and southern parts of Bloemfontein,” says Groenewald.

AfriForum and Cheetahs for Change also plan on making a difference together and challenge schools and the community to join AfriForum Youth in tackling clean-up projects.
