The civil rights organisation AfriForum launched its clean SA initiative in May 2014. This project strives for positive change in the management of waste across South Africa. Furthermore, the aim of the project is to hold involved officials accountable and foster cooperation between communities and the three government spheres, namely the Department of Environmental Affairs at national level, the various provincial departments at provincial level, and the municipalities at local level.
A project “Moenie met ons rommel mors nie” arised from this initiative and is also known as AfriForum’s landfill site audit project. The aim of this project is to audit the minimum compliance requirements for landfill sites in the municipalities where AfriForum’s 150 branches can be found across the country and to also compare it with their waste management licence.
