AfriForum and the community of Senekal handed over a memorandum today to Krog Mokuoane, the speaker of the Setsoto Local Municipality, regarding the extremely poor service delivery in this town. The handover took place after the conclusion of a peaceful protest march during which 400 residents walked to the offices of the municipality.

According to Mike Odendaal, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Senekal branch, the sewage system in Senekal, Matwabeng and Tambo no longer functions.

“Various main drainage pipes are blocked and various pump stations that must drain waste water to sewage works is out of order. This results in untreated sewage and waste flowing into the Sandpruit River in various places.”

The community demands that mayor Nthateng Maoke, the council members of wards 4, 5, 6 and 7, and senior officials of the municipality visit Senekal, Matwabeng and Tambo within seven days of receipt of the memorandum. Residents from these communities will then take them on a guided tour to investigate the dysfunctional sewage system.

The memorandum further amongst others demands that:

  • answers be provided, within 14 days, on why the waterworks in Senekal has been dysfunctional for the past three years;
  • the municipality urgently investigates and announces a plan of action to the public regarding the sewage system within three months; and
  • the water supply and purification system be repaired and upgraded and that this be prioritised in the municipality’s IDP.
