The AfriForum branch in Schweizer-Reneke had a breakthrough when, after an insightful meeting, the Mamusa Local Municipality started cleaning up illegal landfill sites and repairing roads in this town.
AfriForum’s local branch management held a meeting with Rantsho Gincane, the local municipal manager, on 16 February 2021. Various problems in the town were discussed during the meeting. The meeting was positive and Rantsho convinced the branch that he would jump right in to resolve these problems. He also asked AfriForum for assistance.
The municipality announced on 23 February that it will be cleaning up illegal dumping sites in cooperation with the Public Enterprises division. It also cautioned the community to cooperate.
The municipality also started to repair potholes, which especially affect business owners directly.
According to Gerhard Nieuwoudt, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland, the Municipal manager contacted him telephonically to thank him for his enthusiasm and positive attitude. “It is a small step in the right direction. We are thankful for the good and positive actions and work by the municipality. It is indeed so that, if we set politics and differences aside, we can improve matters in our communities significantly. We will continue to meet with the municipality to ensure that they carry out their responsibilities towards the community,” Nieuwoudt says.
