The inquest into the death of Suraya Deedat and her four children in a house fire in 2011 will continue on 10, 11, 15 and 16 February 2021 in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. Adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, represents Suraya’s family in the case. A fire expert, insurance assessor, a family member of Naeem Deedat (Suraya’s husband and the person of interest in the investigation) as well as members of the SAPS will be called to testify.
The cross examination of Nazeema Ahmed, Suraya’s mother, was completed today.
“AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit hopes that the inquest will lead to justice for Suraya’s family and that the court will order that the National Prosecuting Authority has to institute prosecution. It is important that AfriForum becomes involved in cases such as this one for justice to be served for the family. They have been waiting for nine years for answers about what happened that evening,” says Natasha Venter, advisor for AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.
