AfriForum’s safety structures were part of about 500 vehicles that participated in a protest convoy today. The convoy comprised various organisations, rural safety structures and members of the public, who wanted to express their discontent with the wave of farm attacks that is ravaging the country.
On 5 August, an elderly couple from the Dendron district was assaulted and seriously injured in their home by three attackers. The SAPS arrested three suspects later that morning and recovered stolen goods. During the arrest, a shoot-out ensued, and one suspect was injured. The suspect later died in hospital.
The other suspects appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court today. The case was postponed to 14 August, when the suspects will apply for bail. AfriForum supported the family at the court proceedings.
“These reprehensible attacks on farmers can no longer be tolerated. It is heart-warming that communities are showing more and more opposition towards farm attacks. AfriForum will continue creating awareness for farm attacks and will continue helping communities to become more defensible,” says Andries Opperman, AfriForum’s Safety Coordinator for Limpopo.
