AfriForum’s Postmasburg branch demands municipal action after water supply was drastically limited by Sedibeng Water on Sunday, 29 January 2017.
The Tsantsabane Municipality allegedly owes around R20 million to Sedibeng Water – the reason why the water supply was limited.
“It is unfair to punish loyal, paying residents when municipalities fail to pay their debts,” says Gonda Louw, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for the Kalahari. “For this reason, AfriForum requested the Municipality in writing on 30 January 2017 to restore the water supply in full and to provide us with a written plan on how they plan on paying the money owed to Sedibeng Water.”
AfriForum also contacted the Department of Water and Sanitation to seek help.
“The Municipality’s apparent poor financial management is worrisome. They also owed a large amount to Eskom. AfriForum will bring an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000 to establish how the Municipality is spending tax-payers’ money, as well as to ascertain the Municipal Manager’s qualifications,” Louw concludes.
AfriForum will also draw up a petition to bring the residents’ dissatisfaction to the Municipality’s attention.
