AfriForum’s West Moot neighbourhood watch on Saturday 17 February in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) held a visibility action in the Hercules area and later the evening made four drug-related arrests.
According to Johan Liebenberg, Chairperson of AfriForum’s West Moot branch neighbourhood watch, the arrests were made in cooperation with the Hercules Police Station’s K9 Unit. The arrest took place under the Hendrik Street bridge, which is a point of concern in the area.
“Cooperation and support – among others between the community, neighbourhood watch and the police – plays a key role in crime prevention,” says Liebenberg.
On Sunday 18 February this branch also cleaned the cemetery in Van der Hoff Road. “The final resting place of people’s deceased loved ones must be clean and safe, so that people do not feel uncomfortable visiting the cemetery,” says Tiaan Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng North.
“It is amazing to see how the community can work together on a communal goal to live in a clean and safe area,” adds Oosthuizen.
AfriForum urges the community in the Tshwane Metro to become involved with their local AfriForum branches and take part in the activities of the neighbourhood watches. For more information, send an email to tiaan.oosthuizen@antiek.afriforum.co.za.
