The AfriForum branch in Nylstroom paid for two additional days’ work on 13 January to ensure that Jaco Vosloo of M & T Grondverskuiwings could make the Donkerpoort Dam – Nylstroom’s main water source – deeper to allow for more water storage capacity.
“The current drought offered a unique opportunity to become involved in the community initiative to make the dam deeper, especially since it is currently almost empty. AfriForum’s contribution increases the dam’s capacity by about one megalitre,” says Tjaart du Plessis, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Nylstroom branch.
Chris Boshoff, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Limpopo, says that by incurring these expenses, AfriForum ensured that about one megalitre additional water per day is available to Nylstroom residents. This equals one hundred 10 000 litre water tanks.
According to Du Plessis, other stake-holders such as the Waterberg Chamber of Commerce and property owners along the dam also contributed to increase the dam’s capacity.
