The civil rights organisation AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch management replaced a manhole cover on 18 February 2020 after a member of the community had approached the branch to cover the manhole.
The branch approached the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to replace the cover, as the open manhole was dangerous. The Metro’s attempts did not adhere to by-laws and prescribed service requirements. The branch once again brought it to the Metro’s attention but received no reply. The branch was therefore compelled to buy the cover and replace it themselves.
“Small deeds like this one prove that you can make a real difference when focusing on community interests,” says Jan Vermaak, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch.
