The AfriForum branch in Germiston opposed the disgusting state of their town with a clean-up action that was launched on 18 May 2019 in the Primrose area. This action forms part of a series of projects aimed at solving problems that occur in the town by themselves. The branch also cleaned up the Oak Avenue neighbourhood across Mini Movers in cooperation with the Germiston branch of the Voortrekkers.
A local contractor removed weeds and cut grass, while branch members and the Voortrekkers picked up litter in the area.
“Even though this action is not a sustainable solution to the problem, it is still gladdening to see how people stop next to the road and want to become involved, or simply want to express their gratitude towards the branch members,” says Elize Hern, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Germiston branch.
“Actions such as these serve as concrete proof that community structures must strive for a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future and become involved themselves to tackle problems proactively. The community is encouraged to engage in the actions of the Germiston branch,” adds Hern.
