Members of AfriForum’s Alberton, Brakpan, Germiston and Springs neighbourhood watches received training in crowd control and radio procedure on 10 and 11 April 2019. This training mainly dealt with the mandate of patrollers during riots with large crowds and the dos and don’ts of radio communication procedures.

Thomas van Dalen, AfriForum’s National Training Manager, presented the training that about 55 members of the East Rand neighbourhood watches attended.

According to Van Dalen professional training is a necessity for any safety structure.

“Members of AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches should act within the framework of the law at all times. Furthermore it is important that these members receive the correct training – for their own safety as well as that of the community.”

“It is encouraging to see the involvement of community members and how everyone is willing to prioritise the safety of their own community,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the Northern region.
