AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park, Springs and Endicott participated in the civil rights organisation’s national patrol on Friday 4 October 2019 in their respective areas. The patrol was held in cooperation with the SAPS, local community policing forums, community members, various security forms and other safety institutions.
270 patrollers (excluding security firms and safety institutions) travelled 4 340 km in total with 120 vehicles. The patrol started at around 16:00 and lasted until 06:00 the next morning. Support was given during an assault, two fires in residential areas, a vehicle theft, an attempted housebreak and various motor vehicle accidents.
“The East Rand neighbourhood watches will continuously launch projects and organise patrols to curb crime and increase safety in cooperation with the SAPS and other security institutions,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the northern region.
