The AfriForum branch in Centurion on 12 September proceeded with the clean-up of the Montague Kneen Park in Valhalla and numerous community members assisted.
AfriForum directed a number of letters to the Tshwane Metro regarding the state of the park and also requested the Metro to submit an action plan for the renovation thereof. No feedback has however yet been received.
The branch subsequently took ownership of the park and will in future clean it up and maintain it themselves. Large parts surrounding the water channel were cleaned up and deforested to improve the safety in the area. Grass was also cut and refuse removed to improve the overall condition of the park.
“A big thank you to everyone that was involved with the project. When communities work together, a cleaner and safer environment can be created,” says Sampie Steinberg, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria.
“AfriForum’s structures will continue to ensure that a healthy environment is created for everyone and work hard to prevent the same problems from being repeated again. We are grateful to everyone that sacrificed their time to participate in this project,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria.
“This is a good example that we will take ownership and tackle problems ourselves to improve the environment,” concludes Nel.
