The AfriForum branch in Brakpan this past weekend assisted with the replacement of two geysers at the Tweedy Park apartments, which mainly houses elderly residents. This follows after community members and the residents over the past couple of years submitted numerous complaints at the Ekurhuleni Metro regarding the decline of the apartments. The branch has already in the past requested the Metro on behalf of the residents to regularly perform repairs.
The branch has, among others, directed various letters and letters of demand to the Metro that fell on deaf ears. The geysers were replaced after two community members approached the branch for assistance with the replacement of geysers for two of the fourteen apartments. Assistance was also rendered with other general repairs.
The two community members fixed a big water leak, which has already been reported to the Metro more than four months ago, within 20 minutes at a cost of R150. The geysers are unfortunately not the only problems at Tweedy Park. Only one of the two lifts are in a working condition, the hall’s roof caved in at the front and the apartments’ general maintenance is faulty.
“It is sad that our senior citizens must live in such circumstances. It is important that the community stands together to force the Metro to fulfil its responsibility,” says Stephanus (Butch) Blignault, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
“AfriForum’s Brakpan branch would like to thank the two community members for the repair of the water leak. We hope the geysers that were replaced and the general maintenance will lead to the improvement of the senior citizens’ circumstances,” says Gerhard Cilliers, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Brakpan branch.
