The AfriForum neighbourhood watches in Bloemfontein were on 17 October 2019 named both the Best Neighbourhood Association/Watch and Best Neighbourhood Forum during the Best of Bloemfontein Reader’s Choice Awards. This is the fourth consecutive year that AfriForum was honoured at this award ceremony.
The Best of Bloem Awards is annually presented by the Bloemfontein Courant. It consists of a total of 99 categories and altogether 189 000 votes were casted for this year’s awards.
The awards bear testimony to the excellent service delivered to the community by AfriForum’s volunteers – in their own time and at their own expense. AfriForum’s aim is to create a safer and better community and portfolios such as community safety, environmental affairs and local government affairs are of great help in this regard.
AfriForum has accomplished quite a lot in Bloemfontein over the last couple of years and there are, among others, nine AfriForum neighbourhood watches, a 24/7 control room that is able to communicate with all the AfriForum neighbourhood watches by means of repeaters, as well as the national radio network. A medical vehicle and a reaction vehicle were purchased to react to crime. The medical vehicle is a registered ILS medical vehicle that is fully equipped and manned by voluntary paramedics.
“AfriForum is making a plea to communities to become involved and start prioritising their safety themselves. We cannot trust the state alone to look after our safety. Become involved at any local safety institution in your area or join AfriForum today and become part of the solution,” says Joseph Renaud, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the central region.
