The civil rights organisation AfriForum and the service organisation Solidarity Helping Hand just announced that they will expand their emergency fund to offer assistance to those areas in the Western Cape that are currently being ravaged the worst by devastating fires. This emergency fund is specifically for situations such as those currently prevailing in the Western Cape and more specifically the fires in the Knysna area. The fund has previously been used to transport fodder to drought stricken areas to aid the residents of Calvinia who didn’t have water, and now to help the people of Knysna.
“We would like to encourage people to contribute to the fund, because we believe that such a fund empowers more people to make a contribution,” says Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.
Cameron explains that AfriForum in cooperation with provincial disaster management teams will identify additional collection points where support goods can be sent. The specific items that people can donate will also later be made available via social media.
