AfriForum requested that the uMhlathuze Local Municipality supply proof to the civil rights organisation that senior management indeed comply with the minimum qualification requirements, as set out in the Municipal Financial Management Act, 2003 (Act no. 56 van 2003).

“We find that municipal positions are awarded to friends and acquaintances who do not comply with the minimum legal requirements,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

AfriForum recently won an appeal case with cost against the eMadlangeni Local Municipality after this municipality refused to give heed to the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000 (Act no. 2 of 2000) (PAIA). AfriForum will consider approaching the court again should uMhlathuze also refuse this request.

AfriForum is often approached by whistle blowers who report improper appointments and invites the public to continue to report any corrupt activities to the civil rights watchdog.
