The civil rights organisation AfriForum on 13 May 2020 donated personal protective equipment and hand sanitiser to the Elim Rehabilitation Centre in Kempton Park on the East Rand. The Elim centre treats persons suffering from addictions. The Kempton Park branch donated 25 litres hand sanitiser, 500 pairs of gloves and 500 face masks to the centre.
Jan Vermaak, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch, says it is an honour to make this donation to the Elim centre. “It is the beginning of a partnership that will be long-lasting.”
Dr Eugene Brink, Manager of Health at AfriForum, says there is still a great need as far as sanitisers and protective equipment is concerned.
“Institutions have in many cases not budgeted for this or simply cannot afford it and are now experiencing a great need in the COVID-19 period. They are taking care of vulnerable and dependent people and cannot work safely if they do not possess such equipment.”
According to Brink there are many institutions that are now approaching AfriForum for support with regard to medical products associated with combating COVID-19.
“Sometimes just a little bit of help goes far and we are encouraging the public to contribute towards our branch emergency fund so that we can utilise the funds in aid of our community.”
