The AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Ellisras teamed up on Tuesday evening, 11 September to help extinguish a truck that caught fire outside Ellisras. The neighbourhood watch was deployed after an emergency call informed them of the burning truck and that their help was needed to extinguish the flames.
According to Aldo Venter, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Ellisras branch, the truck’s cabin was destroyed by the fire. “When the emergency call came in, I immediately filled up my fire extinguishing equipment and raced to the scene. Upon our arrival, the truck was already engulfed in flames, and although we succeeded in extinguishing the fire, we could not avoid the damage to the truck. We also prevented the fire from spreading to the veld next to the road,” Venter says.
Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Limpopo, says that it is important for communities to work together for the sake of efficient reaction during emergencies. He encourages community members to join existing structures to support one another in this regard.
