The civil rights organisation AfriForum this past weekend mobilised more than 5 200 people across the country during a national community patrol. Approximately 282 safety structures and institutions participated in the country-wide crime prevention operation.

“This display of force is an example of how communities are taking back their streets from criminals in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Hawks, private security and community structures. Three murder suspects were arrested in cooperation with the SAPS and there were also many drugs seizures,” says Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.

Cameron is of the opinion that it is gladdening to see that so many people are starting to work together to fight the criminal war in South Africa and adds that it is the only way to ensure the safety of the country’s citizens.

The institutions that participated include AfriForum neighbourhood watches and various security companies, community policing forums, tow-in services, police stations, local businesses, paramedic services and traffic divisions.
