On 18 August 2017 the AfriForum branch in Utrecht laid eleven charges of corruption with the Hawks in Pietermaritzburg against Gugu Ntshangase, former Municipal Manager of the Emadlangeni Local Municipality, for further investigation.
This follows a full internal investigation into alleged corruption at the Municipality. A report written after the conclusion of the internal investigation determines that the Municipal Council should take criminal steps against Ntshangase. However, this has not happened within six months – hence AfriForum’s decision to act and lay criminal charges with the Hawks.
“AfriForum’s Utrecht branch wants to cooperate with municipal officers to ensure an efficient municipal management,” says André Homann, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Utrecht branch.
“We regularly see municipal funds being used for personal enrichment, while the community suffers as a result,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal. “We therefore encourage municipal officers to come forward if they are aware of corrupt activities to ensure that culprits are brought to book. It is everyone’s responsibility to help eradicate corruption.”
