The civil rights organisation AfriForum on 22 March established a branch as well as a neighbourhood watch in Edenvale. This follows after various community members expressed the need for an AfriForum branch and neighbourhood watch to tackle the ongoing lack of municipal service delivery and the high level of violent crime in the town.

The branch management consists of Nico Appruzzese (Chairperson), Melinda McKenzie (Vice-chairperson and Community Safety), Leslie Thomas (Treasurer), Helen Simpson (Secretary) and Gary Thomas (Environmental Affairs).

The neighbourhood watch management consists of Melinda McKenzie (Chairperson), Veruska Brits (Secretary), Derelle Steyn (member of management) and Bruce O’Hare (member of management).

“With this new branch the community of Edenvale is keen to start making a difference in their environment. The establishment of the neighbourhood watch will also contribute to a stronger safety network in the East Rand,” says Marie Naude, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng South.

“I am proud to be part of an organisation such as AfriForum and believes that the establishment of an AfriForum neighbourhood watch will be a turning point in the fight against crime in Edenvale. I would like to make a plea to the community of Edenvale to join the local AfriForum branch and neighbourhood watch,” says Nico Appruzzese, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Edenvale branch.
