The civil rights organisation AfriForum recently established a new branch in Sodwana after numerous requests from the community. The founding committee comprises Christo van Jaarsveld (Chairperson), Louis Olivier (Vice-chairperson), Emmse Burger (Treasurer) and Petro van Jaarsveld (Secretary).
During the founding meeting, Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal, presented the organisation’s model and recent success stories. AfriForum’s model focuses on making communities stronger and curb the irreversible deterioration of government responsibilities on local government, community safety and environmental level. AfriForum’s offering include accredited training, equipment, a national network and valuable experience.
“We are excited to be part of an organisation that serves communities. We face unique challenges in Sodwana. We want to be part of AfriForum’s safety and want to start working on it immediately,” says Christo van Jaarsveld, new Chairperson of AfriForum’s Sodwana branch.
“We are excited to expand our structures in Sodwana. We see the need every day for communities who are involved in ensuring service delivery. We have a fight and build approach to good service delivery, but we will intervene ourselves where the state fails,” says Van Aswegen.
AfriForum’s Sodwana founding committee invites the community to become part of the Sodwana branch: SMS “Sodwana” to 45344 (R1).
