AfriForum directed a letter on 28 July 2020 to Makgorometje Makgata, acting Municipal Manager of the Tshwane Metro, about the electricity problems that currently affects large areas of Pretoria. The organisation was inundated by complaints from members about power failures over the past five days.
The strike of the past week caused more pressure on the already poor municipal service delivery. Complaints from residents include that they receive no feedback on the reference numbers that were allocated to them. Moreover, the Metro’s after-hours call centre is inactive, and residents receive no feedback. This means that households and businesses have to ensure a whole weekend without power if the supply is cut off on a Friday afternoon.
“AfriForum demands in its letter that the Metro make its after-hours call centre available immediately. If not, AfriForum will not hesitate to contact Nersa to ensure that the Metro complies with applicable legislation,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria.
“AfriForum expects the Metro to get its house in order immediately. We will take further steps to protect residents’ rights if the Metro fails in its duties,” says Sampie Steinberg, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria.
“AfriForum will monitor the situation carefully and apply pressure where necessary,” Steinberg concludes.
