The civil rights organisation AfriForum – who is representing the Meyiwa family in the investigation into the 2014 murder of the former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa – appeared together with his brother Sifiso in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today, where five suspects appeared for the first time after their arrest by the SAPS yesterday. The case was postponed to 27 November.
The suspects were identified as Muzikawulahlelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokosizi Maphisa and SifikuhleNkani Ntuli Sifiso.
“AfriForum confirmed yesterday that Senzo Meyiwa’s death was not the result of a botched robbery, but that it was in fact an assassination. The arrests and appearances of the five accused is but the beginning of the process to ensure justice prevails, because the mastermind behind the conspiracy has not yet been arrested,” says Adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.
According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, such cases confirm that institutions such as the Private Prosecution Unit are necessary to ensure justice prevails.
“We are grateful that the SAPS were willing to involve Adv. Nel and the Private Prosecutions Unit in the investigation over the past few months. AfriForum’s Private Prosecutions Unit will continue to support the Meyiwa family, as well as to monitor the case in the interest of justice,” Kriel says.
Sifiso said on behalf of the Meyiwa family that they are proud to be associated with AfriForum and that they are happy that the organisation took the necessary steps to ensure progress in the case. “We are grateful for the arrests, but we are still worried about the fact that the mastermind has not yet been arrested. We remain hopeful that more arrests will follow.”
