AfriForum’s Margate branch supplies water to community

The AfriForum branch in Margate and the Dutch Reformed Church Margate’s collective borehole this past month provided more than 50 kl of water to the community after the local municipality failed to supply the community with basic access to water and also didn’t make water tanks available.

“The pressure on our local economy and basic living standards is enormous. Individuals and businesses daily come and collect loads of water that are just enough to provide for their basic needs,” says Barry Smit, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Margate branch.

“The municipality is failing in its duty to provide water and is placing the entire Ugu district at economic and health risk. This borehole project is characteristic of what a community can do to find a sustainable solution for their problems themselves,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

AfriForum’s Margate branch invites the public to join the branch and become part of the local management team to expand similar projects across the Ugu district.
