AfriForum’s Brakpan branch held a successful mass clean-up action at the Tweedy Park old age home on 19 October 2019. This action forms part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign, which aims to help communities solve problems in their towns through their own initiatives. The branch cleaned the inside of the home as well as the area around the home.
A local contractor volunteered to cut the grass and branch members removed trash in the surrounding area. Branch and community members helped to clean the sidewalks and water furrows around the home and remove weeds. A few loads of trash were collected and removed.
“The branch succeeded in making a difference in the community and also helped reduce the workload others have to face. Initiatives like this demonstrate that community structures should strive for a cleaner, safer and sustainable future by being proactively involved in solving their town’s problems. We believe it will also encourage other residents to become involved,” says Gerhard Cilliers, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Brakpan branch.
