AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch found a vehicle that had been hijacked on 28 August 2019 after a request for support came in at around 22:00. The vehicle was found in cooperation with the Kathlehong North SAPS, Alberton’s SAPS, the local community policing forum and various other security institutions.
According to information gathered at the scene, two armed robbers had hijacked the victim’s Opel Corsa bakkie. The victim, who was taken to hospital, had been hit over the head with a hammer and firearm.
Information pointed to the suspects fleeing in the direction of the Kathlehong informal settlement. AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch then contacted three SAPS members in Katlehong North, who immediately provided support. The neighbourhood watch members and the SAPS then searched the area and found the deserted vehicle about an hour later at the side of the road. No suspects were on the scene. The scene was then handed over to the SAPS, after which the vehicle was removed.
“We are proud to have been part of so many role-players who work together to safeguard Alberton. It is only through cooperation that is will be possible to curb crime,” says Louis van Aswegen, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch.
