AfriForum’s East Moot neighbourhood watch apprehended a suspect on 1 June 2019 in cooperation with the SAPS, Kilner Park Security and the Tshwane Flying Squad. The suspect supposedly stole a TV, and the theft was reported to the East Moot neighbourhood watch by the TV’s owner.

The suspect was apprehended in a stormwater pipe with the stolen TV in his possession. The owner of the TV positively identified the suspect, after which the suspect was arrested by the SAPS.

According to Andries Opperman, Chairperson of AfriForum’s East Moot neighbourhood watch, cooperation between the different organisations is bearing fruit.

“From the moment the case was brought to the attention of the neighbourhood watch everybody reacted very quickly to apprehend the suspect. In cooperation with its partners, the neighbourhood watch searched the spruit, where the suspect supposedly fled to. We apprehended him there with the stolen goods.

“The power of a community who stands together is unstoppable. I want to really thank the neighbourhood watch, security personnel and the Police, who are all willing to selflessly serve the community,” Opperman adds.

Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Greater Pretoria North, encourages community members to join existing structures and to make a positive change in their areas.

“The success of the neighbourhood watch rests on the active involvement of volunteers in their areas. The community takes responsibility for its own safety, which plays a major part in curbing crime.”
