The AfriForum neighbourhood watches in the East Rand – including Alberton, Benoni, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park, Springs and Endicott – took part in a mass patrol in their respective areas on Friday 19 October 2018. This patrol took place in conjunction with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Community Policing Forum (CPF), community members, various security firms and safety institutions.
Altogether 299 patrollers, including members of security firms and other safety institutions, attended. A total of 9 890 km and 1 240 man-hours were completed in 188 vehicles. No serious criminal incidents were reported. The patrol, with the purpose of increasing policing visibility, started at around 18:00 and was concluded at 6:00 the following morning.
“Neighbourhood watches in the East Rand will continue to take on similar projects and regular patrols in conjunction with the SAPS and other safety institutions in an attempt to curb crime and promote safety,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Safety for the northern region.
