On 18 October 2018 AfriForum’s Meyerspark neighbourhood watch apprehended a suspect where he was spotted at the house of one of the watch’s members during a burglary attempt. The neighbourhood watch member described the suspect (who fled with a valuable stolen racing bicycle) over the radio and the neighbourhood watch caught up with him a few kilometres further. Shortly thereafter the South African Police Service (SAPS) was called in for support.
The suspect abandoned the bicycle at the side of the road and ran into a factory, where he became entangled in an electric fence. The SAPS arrested the suspect on charges of possession of stolen goods and trespassing. The SAPS also opened a docket.
“I want to thank our members for their selfless, voluntary action and the neighbourhood watch’s quick reaction and excellent cooperation with the SAPS,” says André Badenhorst, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Meyerspark branch.
