As part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign which kicked off in October 2018, the civil rights organisation’s Springs branch launched a mass clean-up action in Ermelo Road on 29 September.

This follows after members of the Springs branch identified parts with long grass along Ermelo Road as potential hiding place for criminals. A local contractor cut the grass, while branch members cleared refuse in this area. Branch and community members also helped to trim trees, remove weeds and pick up litter in the area. Two loads with about 30 refuse bags were ultimately removed.

“Because the neatness of Springs is deteriorating so rapidly, the branch decided to launch yet another clean-up action – which would span over a period of eight weeks – and specifically tackle the increase in sewage waste in the Blesbokspruit. This project kicked off on 1 October 2018 with an online petition that was also distributed on social media. Henceforth the branch will launch a weekly action to mobilise community members’ involvement in a proactive manner and to place pressure on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality,” says Cornel Swart, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Springs branch.

“These actions are proof that community structures must apply themselves to a cleaner, safer and sustainable future and must become involved themselves to address problems in their environment,” concludes Swart.

The community is encouraged to become involved with the actions of the Springs branch and add their names to the Blesbokspruit petition by visiting the following link: https://antiek.afriforum.co.za/increase-e-coli-blesbokspruit/.
