AfriForum’s Kempton Park neighbourhood watch held a visibility patrol on 3 September in cooperation with the SAPS and MML Security in Norkem Park. An international media team from Sweden accompanied the patrol to report on the state of South African communities.

About 15 neighbourhood watch members, six police members, three security officers and three Swedish journalists participated in the patrol, as well as Prins, a trained dog owned by Lukas Erasmus, one of the Kempton Park neighbourhood watch chairpersons.

“The purpose of the visibility patrol is to act proactively, thereby deterring criminals. AfriForum currently has more than 7 000 neighbourhood watch members across South Africa. It is important that communities realise that crime can be curbed proactively if everyone does their share and become involved,” says Jan Vermaak, AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch chairperson and Commander of Project Nehemiah in the East Rand.

“The AfriForum neighbourhood watch wants to work with the SAPS to curb crime in the East Rand and ensure community safety in a sustainable manner,” says Marie Naude, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
