AfriForum today requested in writing an urgent meeting with Mxolisi Kaunda, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, to discuss the dangerous conditions of roads in the Paulpietersburg and Vryheid districts.
This follows after numerous requests by AfriForum and the community to the local and provincial offices of the Department of Transport had fallen on deaf ears. The AfriForum branch also requested that the community take over these services temporarily from the Municipality.
“There are new equipment and vehicles at the local traffic department offices, but the roads are not being repaired. Fuel levies and toll fees increase every year, yet the roads remain in a very poor condition,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
