Through April 2018 AfriForum tested the water of various areas in Pretoria and surrounds to determine the quality of drinking water (blue drop status) and sewage water (green drop status).
“We could determine that the drinking water in these areas adhered to the minimum standards and contains no harmful bacteria. AfriForum will continually test the water quality, seeing that residents have a constitutional right to clean drinking water,” says Tiaan Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng North.

Green drop results
According to AfriForum’s green drop results the sewage water tested at six sewage treatment plants did not adhere to the set microbiological standards:
Site | Municipality | AfriForum green drop 2018 |
Apiesrivier (Rooiwal) | Tshwane Metro | >100 000 |
Bronkhorstspruit (Godrich) | Tshwane Metro | >100 000 |
Centurion-Wes (Sunderland Ridge) | Tshwane Metro | >100 000 |
Cullinan (Cullinan) | Tshwane Metro | >10 000 |
Kameeldrift (Baviaanspoort) | Tshwane Metro | >100 000 |
Pretoria-West (Daspoort) | Tshwane Metro | >10 000 |
The civil rights organisation voiced its concern because sewage water did not adhere to the set standards.
“We will investigate this further and act if needed. AfriForum is currently specifically involved in a court battle over the Rooiwal sewage treatment plant,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Gauteng.
“AfriForum’s national blue and green drop project is focussed on the state of towns’ drinking water and sewage treatment plants. This project does not necessarily focus on the state of the plant itself, but rather on the quality of the water that is delivered after the process as an end product in the form of drinking water (blue drop) and treated sewage water (green drop),” concludes De Klerk.
AfriForum calls on residents of Gauteng North to give the organisation its mandate to continually monitor the quality of water. SMS “Skoon water” to 45341 and add your name to the support of this action. Each SMS costs R1.
