Members of the Kempton Park community handed a memorandum to Motubatse Motubatse, Head of Urban Planning at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality after a peaceful demonstration in front of the municipal offices on 26 September 2017. The demonstration was arranged in cooperation with AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch, the Edleen Proper Residents’ Association (EPRA) and the Kempton Park Gated Community after the community’s pleas to the Municipality fell on deaf ears.
The memorandum demands among other that:
- Applications in terms of access-controlled areas be heard and approved or declined in terms of the Rationalisation of Local Government Affairs Act (Act No 10 of 1998);
- Delays in the processing of current applications be stopped immediately; and
- Correspondence and communication between the Municipality and public stakeholders be viewed as a priority.
“The community demands that the Municipality reply within 30 days and will continue to apply pressure to ensure that municipal tasks are being performed,” says Rian van Jaarsveld, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch.
